Isn’t technology fabulous? It allows us to see one another even when we’re miles apart. While we usually use this for keeping in touch with friends and family or conducting business, it can also help you get your house organized! Virtual organizing is a service many organizers are offering, but what is it and how can it help you?
There’s no doubt that being organized has some amazing benefits, but it’s not that easy for everyone. That’s where professional organizers come in.
As a professional organizer, I offer a variety of services, one of which is virtual organizing. As you can imagine, I get a lot of questions about this service. It’s a new trend in organizing and one that can be confusing. I’ve outlined all the details here for those who are confused or who are considering booking a virtual session.
What is virtual organizing?
Virtual organizing is when a homeowner and an organizer work together through a video call to get a space organized. The homeowner does all the hands-on work, but they are doing it with guidance and a support system that they may not have otherwise.
Virtual organizing is great for clients who have the time and energy to do the organizing themselves, but may lack direction and motivation. A professional can also look at a space, see the potential, and develop a plan much faster than a non-professional may.
How does it work?
First, we have a phone consultation. My goal is to learn about you: your life, your home, your family and your organizational needs. Knowing all this helps an organizer meet the needs of you and your family. What works for a single person in a studio apartment is going to differ from what works for a family of 5 in the suburbs. You’ll show me some pictures and I’ll make a plan.
We’ll schedule another call and I’ll talk you through some changes I think would work and listen to your feedback. We’ll discuss materials that your space could benefit from, such as hooks, bins, and shelving. If we agree, we’ll move forward. I’ll send you a list of materials to purchase (if needed) and we’ll set up a time to organize!
When your materials are in and you’re ready to get down to business, I’ll walk you through the process step-by-step. The situation will vary depending on the space, the number of belongings, and how independent you’d like to be. We can either stay in touch the whole time you’re working or I can check in with you periodically for updates.
As you work, you can let me know what’s working and what’s not. We can also talk about challenges you’re encountering and things you’re enjoying. When your space is finished, you can get your brag on and send me some amazing “after” pictures that I’ll ooh and ahh over. We’ll also discuss how you’ll maintain your space.
Why does virtual organizing work?
- You’re held accountable. By having someone to answer to, you’re more likely to get it done.
- It’s broken down into manageable steps. This stops you from getting overwhelmed with an overall project. And if you get overwhelmed, help is just a phone call or a text message away.
- Fresh, experienced eyes can see possibilities you may not have considered otherwise.
- It’s quicker than you trying to make a plan and figure it out on your own.
- A shopping list of recommended items will save you hours of online or IRL shopping.
- I’ll listen to your issues and help you address your problems.
- You’ll want to show off those “after” pictures and I’ll be looking forward to see them!
What does virtual organizing cost?
Again, I can’t speak for all professional organizers, but I charge a reduced hourly rate for virtual organizing. I only count the time I spend talking to you and drawing up your plan, not the time you spend organizing on your own. This results in huge savings for clients. What may take 6 or 7 hours hands-on may be covered in an hour or two worth of conversations.
Overall, virtual organizing is a simple, efficient, cost-effective way to get your home organized by a professional.
